Research shows families want more than screen-time over summer

Last year, Sherpa Kids commissioned independent research to better understand the challenges families face outside of school hours. While affordability and access to childcare were key concerns, the findings also highlighted a growing challenge facing many parents: as family life becomes increasingly busy, screen time can quickly become the default option. This isn't because parents don't care, but because, in the moment, it is often the easiest solution when time and choices are stretched.
The research revealed that these concerns become even more significant during the school holidays, particularly over the summer. In Ireland, some schools close for as long as ten weeks, while many others are closed for up to eight weeks.
The research found that:
One of the clearest insights from the research was the growing concern around children's screen time and the reduced opportunities for active play, social interaction and meaningful experiences outside of school mainly throughout the long period of holidays.
• 88% of parents are concerned about their children’s screen time during school holiday
• 62% of children go straight onto devices when no alternative activities are available• 63% of parents use school holiday programmes regularly or occasionally to manage extended school closures
Families are not just worried, they also want alternatives
When parents spoke about screen time, they were often referring to the bigger picture. Many shared concerns about children's exposure to harmful online content, as well as the impact excessive screen time can have on mental health and overall wellbeing.
At the same time, the research highlighted something encouraging: families are clear about what they would like their children to spend more time doing outside of school, telling they would prefer to see their children spending more time outdoors, reading and socialising with friends.
• 91% of parents believe structured programmes help reduce screen time while keeping children active and engaged
These findings are important and demonstrate that families are increasingly aware of the impact technology can have on childhood and are actively looking for solutions that support their children's wellbeing and development.
Holiday Programmes and Camps
At Sherpa Kids, we understand the reality facing modern families. Life has become increasingly busy, with parents balancing work, school routines, childcare and the everyday demands of family life, and technology has naturally become part of children's lives and, in many cases, part of family routines.
We also recognise that it can be useful, entertaining, educational and, at times, simply necessary. The conversation isn't about removing screen time altogether, but it is about making sure children also have opportunities to switch off, be active and experience the world around them.
That's where Holiday HQ comes in.
We believe every child deserves the opportunity to disconnect from devices and reconnect with the experiences that help them grow and develop to their full potential. Through our guided play in Holiday Programmes, we provide an engaging and active screen-free environment where children can:
• Build friendships and social connections
• Stay active through play and movement
• Explore their creativity
• Develop teamwork and communication skills
• Build confidence and independence
• Experience hands-on learning and real-world adventures
These are the moments that help children develop important life skills, create lasting memories and return to school feeling even more confident, connected and ready for the next adventure.
